In observance of Henry County’s Bicentennial celebration, a Torch Run will take place over a 65.7 mile route through all 13 townships in Henry County on Saturday, June 4, beginning at Tri High School at 6:00 AM and ending in New Castle on the Court House square in time for the opening of the time capsule from Henry County’s 1972 Sesquicentennial.  We seek runners from all 13 townships!

As safety is of primary concern for this event, a police escort (Henry Co. Sheriff’s Reserve deputies) will provide a lead vehicle.  A volunteer-driven support vehicle (for runners’ gear, drinks, and snacks) will follow each runner.  A trail vehicle from Henry Co. EMS will follow the support vehicle.

The route will be as follows: depart Tri High School at 6:00 AM; run south on State Road 103 to Lewisville; run east on US 40 through Straughn; run north on Wilbur Wright Road through New Lisbon, Millville, and Mooreland, to Five Points; proceed with torch in vehicle to Blountsville, turn around and drive back to Five Points; run south to US 36, then run west on US 36 to the Blue River Valley School Corporation office; continue west through Mt. Summit and Sulphur Springs to Shenandoah High School; proceed with torch in vehicle to Middletown, turn around and drive back to Shenandoah High School; run south on Raider Road to State Road 38; run east on 38 to Kennard Road, then south until it becomes State Road 234; pass through Kennard, turning west onto 234 until Grant City Road, then run south until State Road 109; run south on State Road 109 into Knightstown; then turn west onto US 40 to Knightstown High School, turn around, then run east on US 40 to Old National Road at Raysville; run east on Old National Road through Raysville and Ogden to State Road 3; north to US 40, then east to Dunreith; run north on State Road 3 through Spiceland to Flying J Truck Stop; due to traffic on the 4-lane section of State Road 3, the torch will be driven into New Castle to Trojan Lane; the torch will then be run east on Trojan Lane, then north on Ross Street past New Castle High School; then run east on M Avenue, then north on Main Street to the Court House.

There are five ways to participate:

  1. Those interested in running must be able to run , while carrying an approximately 4 lbs. electric torch in one arm. While each runner will run at least one mile, the number of runners registering will determine whether it will be possible to run more than one mile. Liability waivers must be signed by each runner (runners under age 18 will require parental signature) in advance. We need runners from all 13 townships to participate!

  2. If you live along the route detailed above, we urge you to cheer on our runners from your home or business!

  3. We are seeking donations, to include a main sponsor. The main sponsor will be mentioned in event promotion and corporate logo will appear on t-shirts and on signs on the support vehicle.

  4. We are seeking the day-long use of a support vehicle (an RV with working bathroom), in which “relief runners” could ride, to fill-in for runners who may not show up at their assigned location.

  5. We are seeking donated bottled water, drinks, and/or other snacks for our runners.

In May (see above for dates), meetings will be held for all runners.  Runners must submit liability waivers then.
